Water Doodle….Numero Uno

It all started when I showed my daughter’s friend my Flickr Favorites while on vacation.  This young lady was so cute, she liked so many pictures she saw on my Flickr Favorite Photostream.  She has seen all.of.my.work, so she’s got a good sense of what I can do and what I like.  She spotted this picture from Margaret Storer-Roche and turned to me and said, “Wow, you should do something like this”.  I looked at it and thought “Yeah, I should….that’d be fun”.

So, I grabbed my favorite floral stencils.  Then picked out some primary colors from my watercolor pencil stash and went to work.



I like the look of watercolors with black and white uniform patterns included. 



Referred to my Doodle Directory many times for ideas while filling in this part.



Had an idea to zentangle up the inside of the Rainbow rings…..but I’ve since scratched that thought.



Must practice more with those watercolor pencils….wanted to have a lot of blue in that lower-right flower,
this isn’t exactly the look I was after.  Ahhh well!



This was a blast to make!!  A bLaSt!!  Free-handed the leaves and the lower blue flowers.  I have to admit, I am more drawn to the precise-ness of the stencils though.

To make one for yourself all you need is:

• A compass
• Good Black fine point permanent marker
• Watercolor pencils
• A stencil or two
• Your Imagination

Doodle Directory Set 4

 

I just finished Set 4 of my Doodle Directory.  I’ve got them all printed out and ready to go!  I made up a couple little IDEA prints to go out with anyone that orders a set.  Hopefully this will be just what is needed to kick start your doodling!  Because we all know what it feels like to sit there….finally have some time to play….and stare at an empty page.  Yep, been there before! 



These are so addictive to make and use…. really!  I can’t help myself but to color them in.  I’m growing quite used to these 4x6 index prints.  They are great for you “Grab-n-Go” types.  I’ve spent many an hour (or 2,3,4) at a sporting event or in a car pool line, and sometimes my brain is done reading!  You see….I’m not the best person at dealing with boredom!  I can’t stand it and it can’t stand me!!  Feelings are mutual!  The best thing about these prints are, I don’t have to be plugged in, powered up, or pilfering thru a design book to find inspiration!  They fit right inside the pocket of my 5x8 moleskine.  So, I always have them with me.  Bliss!

Dance Line

I had high expectations when I started this drawing!!  Too high!!  I even went out and purchased “real “ drawing paper, so that I wouldn’t have that stippling effect that appears when I use graphite on watercolor paper. 



At about this point, I realized I was in over my head!  I toned down my drawing and was happy that I got all those little bodies, somewhat proportioned and recognizable.  And wondered why I thought I was ready to sketch any further.



Once I bailed on my original plan, I just outlined the kids with permanent marker. 



I learned a bit about faces here…..not to draw too much.   If I’m keeping it simple than each mark has to speak loudly.  The third child from the left looks like he could be Frankenstein’s son…..Got a little carried away with my pencil for the mouth.



If I was really smart creative…..I would’ve made it so that these children were lined up to see Santa Claus.  Now, that would’ve been fun. 

However, I would’ve had to adjust each of their little arms……”no touching please”  WHICH …reminds me of the  ”she’s touching me” car commercial, where the family is taking a road trip and one of the kids barely touches the older sister, who totally freaks out about it….Ahhhh, the good ‘ole days!



Had to ad-lib the left side of the blue girl, since her whole body isn’t in the original picture.

 

One of these days, I’ll figure out how to draw a simple quick hand, decided I could get away with a mitten-ed version.



The clothes definitely needed some pattern.
