Sunglass Saturday

Sunglass

Yea, Yea, I know it’s not Saturday…but I started this drawing on Saturday, so that qualifies!

Above, is the inspiration picture for this drawing.  Found on pinterest, but the website [here], doesn’t take you to the artist.  So I don’t know who to give credit to for this.

Contour drew everyone in….and embellished where I could.

My favorite combination:  Markers and watercolor.  Markers for the skin and the rest watercolor.

Just tried to make the colors sloppy….and swirly. I wanted some white space to show thru.

Added a winter hat to the guy (he turned out to be my favorite in this), and made the lady on the left give the Louisville sign.

Soon, I got to the details….the fun and flowery details.  What really makes this work is when I keep things loose.  Meaning……keep some circles open, let the lines overlap.

Had to do something with those mouths!! They were huge!  I opted out of drawing lips…lips are Hard!  I went in and made all the mouths gray.  Well, big mistake… everyone looked half-dead.  So then, I went over the gray and gave everyone white teeth.  Teeth so white it would make any dentist proud!

Just fun!!  I love how the blue lady looks like Janis Joplin…..too funny Smile

Theatrical Thursday

I had so much fun doing Wacky Wednesday last week, I thought I’d try it again.

Thurs2

Looked thru my files for goofy photos and came across this one.  There are twenty-two “characters” in this picture.  Oh Yeah…the fun I can have with all these innocent people!!

Instead of coloring in the clothes with watercolor pencils…it was time to use my long-lost markers!

Tried to use every single color in the rainbow.  I think I succeeded.

I am “on the fence” with whether or not I should put eyes in.  What do you think?

As is my habit…used more of the warmer colors than the cooler ones.  The mix seems to work here.
I wonder if anyone knows just how many bunny ears are up there?

Wacky Wednesday

Wacky1

It all started because I dared to attempt two portrait color-sketches at the same time.

Wacky2

And my “real job” has been crazy.  New instruments, new technology, new codes!  Oh-MY!

My focus ran away and hid.  She was nowhere to be found.  It was time to coax her out with some color! Some fun!  Some light-heartedness!

Since I wanted to do something easy I brought out my watercolor pencils.  I like the way the colors turned out.  For a few years now when we go to take our family picture at the end of our vacations….we do a totally goofy pose to counter the more stylish one, as seen above.

Some of us have more fun than others!  Probably because the leap between normal and crazy isn’t as far for them.

It was nice that my dear dog got in the picture as well.  We’re usually doing many re-takes cuz she likes to wander off.

Now, I’ve never had any one head-over-heels…..rather…. heels-over-head in these wacky shots!  I like it!!

Here’s to a Wacky Wednesday everyone!  May you allow yourself some time to goof off!

Optical Illusion Hand

I came across this picture on pinterest awhile ago.  I thought it looked pretty cool. So, I outlined my left arm/forearm.

This idea was from a 5th grade art class.  Since I always liked fifth grade art, I gave her a whirl.

I hadn’t worked with markers since my Left vs. Right post and I was missing them!

I would probably give myself a “C” for this drawing.  I did not capture the optical illusion like all the other 10 year olds.  I kept having to go back and erase my lines.  I don’t know why I had so much trouble with this.

Markers for the body….watercolor pencils for the background.  I’d like to do more with this…but I’m drawing a blank!  Haha

Vitruvian Man…manifests

davinci_man

So…I got to thinking….that if I really want to continue with figure drawing, that I really should take on the opposite sex.  I remembered this da Vinci sketch, drawn almost 500 yrs ago.  And I thought….ok….why not….not much hair, a definite plus!

Drew out the contour first….like usual.  If I could I would’ve showed you my first attempt here…..he had gorilla proportions….seriously!  (I didn’t have to erase the legs but my, did I do a number on his shoulders!)

I’d prefer to go in and sketch this…but what is there to sketch?  It’s a line drawing.  Ugh!  So, I am now thinking I’ll go in and whimsey-size it.

Left vs. Right

paint-72dpi

I came across this amazing picture from Mercedes Benz advertising last month.

Which inspired me to redo my right brain versus left brain postWhich includes some really good links about this sort of thing.

I drew two ladies.

I mirrored this picture that I spotted on pinterest, for the structure.

Tried my hand at a different style of contour drawing.

Then I wrote out a bunch of adjectives for each brain type.  I’d never get anything done if I shunned all of the above characteristics.

I’d bore myself to tears if I didn’t relate to some of these traits either.

The fun part was coloring in each hat.

It’s pretty obvious what brain is dominant on this woman.

Brain Myth #2: A person's personality displays a right-brain or left-brain dominance.
Fact: The two sides are intricately co-dependent.   (from this article)

You really can’t tell from the outside how people think. Possibly we pick up clues by their behavior and aptitudes. I always think it’s important to pay attention to what people tell you about themselves.

Brain11

I took this little brain dominance (teen) quiz and I was surprised that I came out Right Brain Dominant.  Many questions I could have answered both ways.

And just think we didn’t even factor in introversion or extroversion to the equation.  So many variables, so many choices.  Is it nature?  Is it nurture?  Free-will?  You decide.

Colorful Contours

Needed to step back from my sketch that I’m working on and get some COLOR in.

So, I thought I’d have some fun with contour drawing.  For me, the first step is to get that contour down.

I used watercolor pencils for coloring in the clothes.

It was time for markers in the background.  There’s no better way to fill up that white space than with some definitive pattern…..which I get to color in.

I love those little thought bubbles.  I knew what I wanted to say in the right one.  Wasn’t so sure what to say in the left one….I debated with “I like people that can cook” with “I like people that make me laugh”…and then I thought I’d use “I like people who don’t take themselves too seriously”….but nothing stuck so I’ll leave it blank for now.

I’d love to hear your ideas for what that second thought bubble should say Open-mouthed smile

Look at me Mom….two

So, I’m sketching along….ever so merrily….then I step back and see that I’ve made the arm too short.

Started erasing….and elongating!  Ahh…much better!

Amanda6

I avoided this as long as I could….I was getting a tad bit bored shading, even though that’s what I really wanted to do.  But the picture wasn’t progressing…so I had to contour draw some more.  Hands!  Ugh!  Contemplated putting her in mittens but… well…that just wouldn’t have been proper.

Passable enough!  Since I’ve got momentum….I might as well go on up there and start that wave.

About Me

My photo
By day...I work in the Healthcare field, where every .. i.. has to be dotted and every ..t.. has to be crossed. This blog is the place where I can let myself go and have some fun. I am on a journey. A journey I started a long time ago, but it has been a bit sidetracked with Navy Wife relocations and raising kids. I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and I have got some time for me. No, I will not be one of those moms walking around the house with Empty Nest Syndrome, I have got way too much to do, to learn, to create. Sure, once the kids are gone I will miss them....but hey, there is always the phone, the email, the texting and the Plane tickets! I love my life and my family and It is fun moving into this new stage. I am into Digital Scrapbooking, photography, journaling, Art Journaling and Drawing. I am a do-it-yourselfer and I am trying to teach myself to draw. I am finding that it takes a lot of patience, lots of practice and a good eraser!
